Description/Job Summary
Develops processes that lead to new food products, improved products and cost reductions. Independently plans and conducts multiple project assignments. Helps mentor others in the process. Project scope to include: new processes, quality improvements of existing products, SOP optimization of existing products and technical brand maintenance, i.e. USDA/government compliance. Translates technology trends into new products.
Responsibilities/Duties
1. Promotes applicable safety, regulatory, GIMP requirements in lab, pilot plant, and manufacturing facilities. Assists in writing of new policy and procedures as needed.
2. Executes and manages product development projects to grow top line volume in support of new product development as a percentage of revenue goals. Conducts, leads and supports direct reports in required lab, pilot plant and plant experimentation.
3. Serves as technical expert in 3-4 relevant areas of expertise. Communicates technology trends to the organization
4. Translates technology issues into innovative new products and processes to support Company business goals.
5. Evaluates and applies new technologies relevant to the Company's product portfolio in support of new product initiatives.
6. Directs and participates in the development of products which ensure effective allocation of resources. Champions the NPD process.
7. Understands the competitive landscape and how the Company fits in.
8. Enables growth and promotability of direct reports through coaching and frequent on-going performance feedback.
9. Collaborates with Marketing, Operations and other relevant functions to keep R & D priorities aligned with business needs. Updates project priority matrix weekly.
Required Experience
Requires expert knowledge of the product development process from idea generation, bench top, scale up and commercialization. Should have an outstanding knowledge of the Company and Company systems. Must be an excellent cross-functional team player. Requires clear written and verbal communication skills. Excellent analytical knowledge and problem solving skills. Must have expert knowledge of ingredients including functionality, allergen considerations and cost. Requires expert understanding of food manufacturing processes and the sequence of events necessary to convert raw materials to finished products. Exceptional ability in translating consumer needs and business objectives into innovative new product design requirements. Should be able to manage and develop subordinates. Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time.
Required Education
Bachelors degree in Food or Meat Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering plus 8 - 10 years work experience or the equivalent combination of education, professional training, or work experience.
Preferred Education
Master''s Degree preferred.
